Salt of the World

Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth.” In the gospel of Mathew chapter 5 verse 13, he is teaching a believer how to behave in this world. Jesus teaches that, as believers, our influence on the world is great. We have the ability to either destroy or nurture our homes, churches, and societies. Jesus uses salt as an example. Salt has many uses.

Firstly, salt provides flavor. Food without salt, no matter how you cook it, is tasteless. Just a pinch of salt is all you need in order to flavor the whole dish. Just as salt is extremely powerful in a dish, we are extremely powerful in our society. The goal that we strive for is to bring happiness to others. In order for us to do that, we must be salt that is full of flavor. In the bible, it says that salt without flavor is no good but to be thrown out on the street and trampled underfoot. Just so, if we are flavorless, we are useless.

Secondly, salt is used to preserve. Salt without quality cannot preserve anything. A believer’s life must be disciplined and of good quality. We must be examples for the rest of the world. In love, in prayer, in belief, in sacrifice, in forgiveness, and in all other respects, we must be examples for others. We must show the fruits of the spirit through our lives. Only those who can live by these standards will be able to be like the salt that Jesus speaks of.

No matter where we may live, we have a duty to protect this world from anything the devil may throw at us. Be it a famine, be it a drought, or be it terrorists, we must stand firm. We must be the salt of this earth. We must flavor it and preserve it in good condition. These are the responsibilities that Jesus has given us. Let us assume them and live as brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus. May God bless you and strengthen you. Amen.
